Chapter One

The long ride into town had taken a toll on Lance. Night had fallen quickly in this small town, but here he was making an effort to make her happy. He could only picture the surprise on her face when he arrived unannounced. Another left turn lead the way on the broken asphalt. When the low neon sign appeared he parked the 4runner and went in.

Always fragrant smell of fresh roses met his nose at the door, just like old times. Terry the bouncer waved him in stopping long enough to throw a thumb over his shoulder indicating where she was. Lance could have found her with his eyes closed, but he appreciated the gesture just the same. Pulling one of the flowers from the cold bucket of water he put a dollar in the tip cup.

The roadhouse was crowded as usual, but there was a different vibe in the air that night. Music pumped through the place as people made their way around each other. With the bar in sight Lance made his way to the opened end. A long silver counter lit by tracks in the ceiling over head. Mirrors lined the back wall reflections hidden by liquor bottles in deep stock.

Two skimpily dressed girls worked the crowd and poured straight energy into the shot glasses. The shorter one had long brown hair that she wore pinned back to show off her soft shoulders. Her tight build let the bikini top held her in all the right places. It had been too long in his mind. Not wasting anymore time he leaned over the counter and shouted his drink order. "Yeah, I'll have a Tom Collins and a shot of Zoë.

Both girls stopped and snapped their necks at the sound of his voice. Frozen, Zoë covered her mouth with her hands. The blonde nudged her from behind. Stumbling a bit, she realized that he was really there, there at her bar and calling her name. Once able to walk again she ran to him sliding over the counter. He held her tight as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. She closed her eyes and thought that if she never let him go it would be too soon.

Chapter Two

He stayed with her until after closing around 4:00am. Sitting there talking and catching up on Lance’s travel stories. Charlie sipped her coffee over the paperwork and listened to the group. Her short blonde hair was spiky and highlighted. She was pretty and thin enough to play body double for Kylie any day. The roadhouse had been a joint venture for her and Zoë for the last four years. As much as she didn't want to do all the deposits and tapes she knew the reunited couple would need their time. "Charlie..." Zoë started to whine. "It's okay I can take care of everything." She assured her with a knowing nod. Lance stood up and shook Terry's hand as they started out the door carrying Zoë on his back.

The next day

Zoë slowly woke up and stretched out in the sun lit room. She felt the warmth of another body next to her, something that she was afraid to get used to. Finding his eyes already open she smiled and turned to face him snuggling deep into the covers with him. "How long have you been awake?" Lance reached over and touched her face brushing strands of hair off her forehead. "Not too long, did you sleep well?" She blushed at his attention and nodded yes. "What are you thinking about?' he asked pulling her up to him. “I wasn't expecting you for two weeks or longer." On his chest she felt his voice rumble when he answered. "Business finished early," Zoë rose up to his face and kissed him on his lips happy to have him back where he belonged. He rolled over and hugged her tightly, thankful to be back in her arms. The moment allowed them to find what they had missed over the last two months.
