Chapter Ten

“Ladies and gentlemen, pimps and hoes. Welcome to the last show of the biggest tour this year. The MC wound up the crowd as Lucky waited in the shadows of backstage. The after party was one for the history books. Nelly praised his diamond in the rough find. He announced that Lucky would be headlining her first international tour.

“Yes Lucky you and me baby, I’m taking you to Europe.” Nelly popped a bottle a Chris and drenched her and Sammy.

“Oh my God… are you for real?” the news shocked and excited her. The partiers were almost as thrilled as she was. The next day she already had a dozen interviews.

“So Lucky now that your opening act status has been supercharged to headliner is it safe to say you have arrived?”

“This is all wonderful, I’m just thankful to be along for the ride.”

“Well your star is on the rise sweetie. We look forward to your new album this summer.”

“Yes, June 1st as it stands now.”

“Rumor collaborations are a mile long. Can you give us any hints?”

“Goodness it’s so mixed up. I can say it goes from Snoop& Dre to Cher.

“Wow, anymore duets with Lance?”

“Of course…”

“That’s interesting… well best of luck.”

Truth hurts

“Hello?”

“Were you going to tell me?”

“Nice to hear from you too. Me? Oh I’m fine.”

“Damn it, where are you?”

“SoSo studio…”

“Try again! I already went there looking for you.”

“Where are you?”

“In Atlanta looking for your ass.” Lucky fell silent at his angered voice. She took a deep breath and told him.

“I’m at Tangi’s”

“Well I’m five minutes away, stay there.” With that, he snapped his pone shut and took the exit to midtown. She ordered a drink and tried to gather her thoughts.

He turn the steering wheel into the small parking lot and parked near the back door. Entering the members only club he greeted the bouncer.

“Hey Panda, you seen Lucky?”

“Sure B, she’s up in the loft. Congratulations on the song. You must be excited about her tour, huh?”

“Always…thanks man.” Lance made is way to the loft and sat down at her table.

“Hey” she greeted him lowly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Man I didn’t know until three o’clock this morning.”

“So you are going?”

“Apposed to what? Waiting on your windows, get real. You knew this was coming.”

“Do you think if I knew I’d be this mad?”

“I want you to stop and think. Are you mad because I’m leaving or because everything they said is coming true.”

“What who said? What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Johnny, J.D. and every bitch-ass DJ between here and Alaska and you know that.”

“That’s part of it, but there is more to it than that and you know it.”

“More to what… Us? You are about to start a year and a half tour. I’m going to Europe for a year. Who know where we will be when the dust settles.”

“Well I guess you’re right… Because Lucky is always right. Isn’t that what this is all about?”

“Don’t be like that. That’s not fair.”

“Be like what? You want to quit me then go for it. No big deal.” He took a big gulp of her drink and slammed the glass down.

“What do you want me to say Lance? We can make it through a year of being in different counties. Talking twice a month for three minutes at a time... no! It’s not worth it, nobody want us together anyways.”

“What do I want you to say?” he yelled. “I want you to say your using this tour as an excuse. You’ve forgotten who you are. You’re the shit now, but remember I was there when you were an opening act. You think you can do better than me? Go ahead and try it bitch.”

“You asshole you know it’s not about that.”

“I can’t hear you Lucky.” And with that he stormed out of the bar. Everyone had begun watching the scene unravel. She dropped her head into her hands and tried not to cry. His words hurt her deeper than she had ever known. It was hard but deep down she knew it was the best for the both of them.

Hartsfield was a blur behind her dark glasses. When they finally boarded the flight Sammy tried to break her sullen state.

“Are you feeling ok?” Lucky forced a smile as she settled in her seat. The captain’s voice came over the speaker.

“No big deal Sammy… No big deal.” She squeezed out in a whisper.
